What is a buyout in a voiceover contract?
A buyout is a one-time fee that grants the client broad usage rights — often all media, worldwide, with no end date — instead of paying separate, renewable usage fees. Buyouts trade your future licensing income for a single larger payment, so they should be priced well above a time-limited license, not treated as a convenience discount. And because the spot runs forever, a buyout can also carry a permanent conflict in that product category.
Clients love buyouts because they're simple: pay once, use forever, never renegotiate. That simplicity has a cost, and it should be reflected in the price — you are selling every future renewal in one transaction.
The quieter tradeoff is exclusivity and conflicts. A spot that can run forever can conflict forever: an insurance buyout today may take you out of consideration for every other insurance campaign — including far more lucrative ones — for as long as that client keeps using the spot. Before accepting a buyout in a valuable product space, weigh not just the renewals you're selling, but the future work in that category you may be closing the door on. If the client also wants formal exclusivity, that's a separate, additional negotiation — never included by default.
Read buyout language carefully. 'Full buyout, all media, in perpetuity' is the broadest form. Narrower buyouts exist ('web buyout, 2 years, North America'), and every narrowing is a negotiating lever. If a client wants perpetual national broadcast rights, that's a premium conversation, not a checkbox.
A practical habit: file the exact buyout language with the job. Disputes about what was licensed happen years later, when memories are gone and only the paper matters.
VOpilot's contracts library files agreements (including forwarded contract PDFs, parsed automatically) alongside the job and its money — so the terms you sold are always one click from the income they produced.
